Entitlement, Expectation and Ecstasy
Preparing for Advent is like setting the table for breakfast: we know what to expect. Or do we? Issues of entitlement spring fresh in December. Depression slips over the landscape like North Atlantic fog. In the midst of this, the ecstatic expressions of Zechariah, Mary and Elizabeth – not to mention an angel – shake the boots off us and send us running for cover. How do we make these stories matter for people who take time to show up at church? What’s the difference between preaching and just words? How do we use poetry as a tool for change? Let’s come to the Christmas Eve feast nourished by a wholesome breakfast.
